Domaine du Castel - Blanc du Castel

Chardonnay, Jerusalem Hills

What the Pros say: "Domaine du Castel is an Estate West of Jerusalem at an altitude of 2400ft. The vineyards are planted at a density of 6700 vines per hectare and produce very small yields. The grapes were handpicked and the must was barrel fermented and aged 12 months on its lees in French oak. The aroma is fruity with a hint of roasted almonds. The palate is complex and round with plenty of yellow tropical fruit and citrus. It is very well balanced and mouth coating."

KWO Interpretation: The best kosher Chardonnay in the world. Probably. At least the best kosher Chardonnay that is affordable. Nevermind, this IS the best kosher Chardonnay in the world! Definitely made in the old world style (think dry), this wine still is fruity but still has that great yeasty, Champagne-like flavor. Ages well too (most whites do not). This wine gets more expensive every year, so the time to buy is now!

Herzog "Chateneuf" White Blend

Bordeaux, France

What the Pros say: "Semillon and muscadelle grapes have been selected and blended to make this semi-dry wine typical of the Bordeaux appellation. Herzog Selections has chosen it for its unique, soft flavor, full character and complex, compelling aroma. You will enjoy its fresh and delightful youth but, if you wish, you may age it for additional complexity and depth. It may be served fresh as an aperitive. Best with fish, poultry, cheese and foie gras."

KWO Interpretation: A nice introduction into the world of white Bordeaux, this is a fruity and crisp wine which, simply put, is FUN. Great for dinners with large groups or by the glass when cooking for two, this wine is affordable and delicious. Presently only available for case purchases.

Yarden - 2007 Chardonnay Odem Organic Vineyard

Golan Heights, Israel

What the Pros say: "Yarden Chardonnay Odem Organic Vineyard was produced entirely from grapes grown in the cool Odem Vineyard, which has been farmed organically since 1998. Barrel fermentation and sur lies aging for seven months helps to produce a beautifully complex wine balancing fruit and floral notes with hints of oak and butter. Drink this wine along with intensely flavored fish and poultry dishes."

KWO Interpretation:This is a full bodied and flavorful Chadonnay. A classy bottle, it needs time to really strut its stuff. Here'a  tasting note from an event we recently held. It was a big hit: Opened very toasty and dry, with a citrus rind and bitter aroma. Later, the wine opened up a little bit and had nice citrus aromas and nectarine as well, and a pleasant sweet aroma. Then the pear shined through and the original toastiness of the wine rejoined us, making a very enjoyable and balanced Chardonnay.

2008 Baron Herzog Chenin Blanc Late Harvest

What the Pros say: "The grapes for this wine were harvested from the Ehrhardt block of the Herzog Vineyard. This two acre block of Chenin Blanc grapes are unique for three reasons. First, it receives the utmost care and maintenance throughout the year, especially during harvest. Secondly, the grapes in this block were allowed to ripen to the fullest extent, therby maximizing sweetness. And thirdly, these grapes were harvested very late in the season to provide a uniquely luscious Late Harvest wine characteristic. Full-bodied, luscious, and sweet, with fruity and floral aromas. Best Served With: Fruit-based desserts or pate de fois gras."

KWO Interpretation: This is the best dessert wine that's available for the price! Sweet, tangy, and light enough that you don't have to drink it by the teaspoon. This wine has great balance, which means that the acidity won't burn you and the sugar won't make you pucker too hard! If you are looking for that extra push to make your meal special, try adding a bottle of this great wine!
